Research
Present a cohesive story of your current research, including adequate background, description of the methods used in you research, your progress on the project, and analysis of current results and impact on the future outcome of your project. The presentation must be done in PowerPoint and should last no more than 40 min.
Journal Club
The journal club presentation should follow the following format. First, either ask Dr. Oupicky for suggestion or select a paper and have the selection approved. Briefly explain why was the paper chosen for discussion and explain the scientific background of the paper. Provide a summary of the findings in the paper. It is not necessary to discuss each figure, select only those that are crucial for understanding the findings. Then, identify both the positive and negative aspects of the paper. Finally, explain how the findings in the paper may relate to our work. The presentation should be done in PowerPoint and should last no more than 40 min.
Monthly Reports
Each group member will provide a written monthly research report, due on the 15th of each month. The report should follow usual conventions and style of and be grammatically correct. The report should include: (A) rationale and goals of the research; (B) the important results (both positive and negative) with brief explanation and discussion; (C) brief conclusion and future plans. There is no limit on the length of the report but try to be succinct. Once the report has been handed to me, we will schedule a 30 minute to 1 hour meeting to discuss your results in detail. Please bring all pertinent information to this meeting including spectra and laboratory notebooks.
Seminars
Attendance of all departmental seminars is mandatory for each member of the group.
